It doesn’t require an overhaul to become healthy…
I was recently asked to write an article about “Five Things You Can Do To Improve Your Health”. While I was thrilled for the exposure, I thought “Really? Just five? There are SO. MANY. things people can do to change their health!”
But people don’t usually realize that you can make a thousand tiny decisions that add up to a big picture of overall health. Think of looking at an Impressionist painting. When you are very close to it, you see nothing but a lot of small dots. When you take a few steps back, you see that all of those tiny dots come together to make an identifiable (and usually beautiful) scene.
Your health is truly no different. All of those tiny decisions matter. Dr. David Katz recently wrote an article about eating chips and how, when he does eat chips, he selects the chip he chooses. In the end he says “But more importantly than chips, per se, is the general principle: Which specific product one chooses in a wide variety of food categories matters. In fact, it matters enough that when the effects of food choices across a wide array of categories are added up, they can mean the difference between dying prematurely, or not. They can mean the difference between keeping, or losing, 115 lbs. you don’t want. That’s a hefty and meaningful difference.”
This is how I help people overhaul their health: in baby steps. Even people facing serious health implications requiring significant changes need to be taken in steps to ensure lasting habits that result in long-term improvement. Deciding which baby steps to take will depend on the particular challenges you face and goals you want to achieve.
